The Start

Sunny's first day at the farm.
I got Sunny Smiles on July 31, 2012.  She is a chesnut, four year old, thoroughbred mare.  I got her from a local re-homing facility for horses called Three Plain Bays.  They take horses off the track and start to retrain them. Sunny raced 14 times, winning a total of $25,000 in her career.  When I got Sunny, she didn't bend, she couldn't pick up her right lead canter, and she couldn't do trot poles.  She hated fly spray, didn't lunge to the right, didn't like her ears touched, and was petrified of going on a trail ride.  Sunny is my second horse, but the first one that has needed any training.  When I got my gelding three years ago, he was 12 and competing at novice.

I bought Sunny with the intention that I would event her.  My gelding retired from eventing at the novice level, and I wanted a horse that could take me further.  I had no idea how much work it would be to get her ready to go out on a hack, let alone a show!
